Chapter 1: It started in a Garage.

Every family business has a beginning.

Ours didn't start in a boardroom, or with a perfectly mapped-out business plan. It started with a question… and a mountain.

Jason - husband and father, entrepreneur and the kind of person who doesn't sit still for long, had already built multiple successful companies in the tech world. But like many driven people, success didn't quiet the itch to try something new.

So he set his sights on something completely different: the Rim of Africa hike.

There was just one problem. Food.

Carrying enough food for a long-distance hike isn't just inconvenient...it's heavy, impractical and often the difference between an enjoyable experience and an exhausting one. Jason wasn't willing to compromise, so instead of settling, he did what entrepreneurs do best: He built a solution.

From One Idea to a Business Food Journey

What started as a personal challenge quickly metamorphosed into something exponentially more significant.

Jason invested in freeze dryers and began preparing his own lightweight, long-lasting meals. The initial concept was straightforward: address a hiking predicament. Yet what emerged was utterly unexpected: a realisation that this innovation could improve solve challenges for countless others.

That epiphany became Forever Fresh Foods.

Suddenly, the venture transcended beyond one hike. It evolved into fuelling adventurers, hikers and everyday explorers seeking reliable, lightweight sustenance. This marked the genesis of a small business food journey that no family member could have entirely anticipated.

However, like any authentic family business narrative, our story was far from concluded.

Growing Beyond the Garage

As demand grew, so did the entrepreneurial vision. We of course moved out of the garage and into a production factory ;)

What commenced as sustenance for outdoor enthusiasts expanded into something more pragmatic and increasingly urgent. The world was shifting paradigms and people were reconceptualising their approach to preparedness.

That's when Proactive Foods materialised.

With an emphasis on extended shelf longevity and unwavering reliability, it provided families with peace of mind during uncertain times.

  • Long-term food storage solutions
  • Emergency preparedness meals
  • Reliable nutrition for unpredictable situations

So what else can we do?

Instead of pursuing external opportunities, we redirected our focus homeward.

What do people genuinely require on a daily basis? Not during extreme circumstances. Not whilst traversing mountainous terrain. At home.

That pivotal inquiry catalysed the creation of Forever Frozen - ready-to-eat meals meticulously designed for convenience, quality and authentic daily life. These weren't provisions requiring weeks of advance planning or specialised storage conditions. Simply exceptional food, prepared when necessity demanded.

Nearly two years into this venture, the expansion has been nothing short of extraordinary.

What originated in a modest garage has evolved into a trusted local food brand in South Africa, serving families remarkably similar to the one that conceived it. These meals now grace dinner tables across the nation, offering convenience meals that busy households desperately needed.

The Family Behind the Business

Behind every exceptional product lies a family that orchestrated its realisation.

You've already met Jason, so let's introduce you to the other three members...

Nathalie, wife and mother, originally from France, brought a sense of structure into the business that it didn’t even know it needed. What started as helping out quickly turned into leading operations and logistics, where her eye for detail keeps everything running smoothly. Nothing slips past her...not even the smallest thing. (And yes, if something in the kitchen gets moved even slightly… she’ll notice.)

Maxine, the eldest daughter, joined the business after studying psychology and spending time at the Sustainability Institute. She began in marketing at Forever Fresh Foods, but her path didn’t stay in one place for long. From stepping into production, to now driving growth as Sales Director, she’s experienced almost every corner of the business and brings that perspective into everything she does.

Alexa, the youngest, took a slightly different path before returning to the family business. After studying education and teaching in Wellington for two years, she realised her place was back with the family. Today, she leads marketing and systems, combining creativity with structure… and every now and then, still gets convinced to join Jason on another hike.

Collectively, they've transformed a singular concept into something exponentially more significant than a conventional business venture.

More Than Just a Family Business Story

This narrative transcends mere sustenance.

It embodies problem-solving. Risk-taking. Building something profoundly meaningful...collaboratively.

From freeze-dried provisions for a solitary hike to nourishing households nationwide, this journey continues unfolding. Our family business now delivers convenience meals around South Africa that transform daily dining experiences for countless families seeking affordable meals without compromising quality.

If our family has demonstrated anything definitively, it's this fundamental truth: Sometimes the most extraordinary ideas don't originate from elaborate strategic planning.

They begin in a garage.
